Best Books to Read While Traveling

We travel and go on vacation to get away from it all. What better time to crack open a good book than when you’re traveling?

Instead on mindlessly scrolling through Facebook while waiting to board your flight or watching one of the in-flight movies, pick up a book you’ve been wanting to read but never seemed to have time for!

So, what are the best types of books to bring with you on vacation?

Here’s a quick little guide to help you out!

For the Plane

Choose a book that’s so engrossing, you’ll barely be able to put it down! Some of my favorites are fantasy mysteries, magical realism, or classic novels. These types of books are easy to get lost in and forget that you’re on an uncomfortable plane ride, cramped behind someone who decided to recline their seat ALL the way without even so much as a warning… you know that feeling. But, with the right book, you won’t even care!

Here are some of my favorite choices:

The Night Circus

The Book of Speculation

Life of Pi

The Handmaid’s Tale

Anything by Jane Austen

For the Pool/Lounging

This is a great time for a light-weight read. Something fun, with a few giggles here and there. These will be a funny memoir or inspiring travel stories or maybe a collection of short stories. This should be a book that you can easily put down when you reach your stop on the train or when you’re ready to hop in the pool and cool off for a few minutes.

Here are a few of my top picks:

Eat Pray Love

Confessions of a Shopaholic

The Nanny Diaries

Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea

For Inspiration

Finally, to give yourself a sense of rejuvenation and excitement to return to your life and make big things happen, choose an inspiring book to end your trip with! This book should challenge your world-views, encourage you to try something new, and/or make you rethink your approach to work, love, and relationships.

Here are some of my personal favorites:

Big Magic

Tribe of Mentors

Eating Drinking Overthinking

Soul Pancake

The Gifts of Imperfection

Books or E-reader?

Now that you’ve picked out a few great reads for your trip, you need to decide HOW you would like to read them. Paperback, hardback, e-reader… there are so many options!

Personally, I LOVE that tangible feeling of paper under my fingers, but for traveling, an e-reader just makes more sense. It’s much smaller and more compact for packing.

I love my Kindle and with the new, water-resistant options, you can’t go wrong!

Here are just a few of the great features of the new Kindle Paperwhite:

  • Water resistant – making it ideal for poolside or bathtub reading

  • Resolution: 300 ppi (meaning it has a nice crisp display)

  • It’s lightweight and thinner (only 8.18mm thick and weighs 182 grams)

  • Battery life – depends on how often you use it, but on a full charge, it should last for a few weeks (or, your entire vacation!)

  • Storage: 8GB up to 32GBLED built-in light with adjustable brightness

You can pick one up here.

And if you don’t want to buy an e-reader, you can always download the Kindle app to your phone or existing tablet!
